Captions for Figures
What is a Caption?
Where do you add Captions?
You must insert a caption underneath any figure or table that you include in your report.
Avoid:
Captions should be to the point.
Avoid stating what the type of map or graph is.
See below for examples of how to write captions:
- A short piece of text under a picture that describes the picture or explains what the people in it are doing or saying.
- A title or brief explanation accompanying an image, map, table, graph etc.
Where do you add Captions?

- A figure is a map, graph, photograph or diagram.
- A table is a table which usually contains information or data.

There are two ways to insert a caption:

3. The caption box should have the word 'Figure' and number e.g. Figure 1 in the textbox already. Type in your caption.

5. The caption should show up underneath your figure, like the example below.
To update the List of Figures on the Contents page (page after the Cover Page)
1. Right click on the List of Figures
2. Click on Update Field
3. Click on Update Entire Table
4. Your caption should sync and show up in the List of Figures with the page number. It should look similar to the example below:
